Post rock limestone fence posts have an incredibly unique and deeply rooted American history you cannot find anywhere in the world!
These stones fence posts were hand quarried from 1870-1920 by hard working pioneers In North- Central Kansas. The Kansas landscape was free of any major source of wood for traditional split rail fence posts for cattle causing a palpable problem for early Kansas settlers. Using their ingenuity and work ethic they found the post rock region of Kansas had a unique ledge of soft limestone 8-12” thick under a thin layer of soil that was ideal to drill and cut to lengths of 5-6’ that could be used for rock fencing. Farmers could either do this work themselves or pay 25 cents per post. After quarrying, the soft limestone would harden as it was exposed to air. The stone fenceposts were then hauled by a team of horses to be set by hand 18”-24” deep, frontiersman could usually set about 25 rock posts a day spaced about 10 steps apart each one weighing 250-450lb. These rocks still stand today over a century later and counting as a testament to the fortitude and robustness of both post rock limestone and early European settlers of the Kansas frontier.
